Cruising Association Prize Winner
I really wanted to win the prize which came with this competition – a diving jacket with air tank – because I did once in mid Channel get a really thick line round my prop and no matter how many times I dived with face mask and snorkel my regulation-issue bread knife achieved nothing. It wasn’t until I sailed up to a Brittany harbour entrance, thumbed a tow, ran aground on sand on a falling tide and got out a hacksaw and hammer and chisel that I cut away the welded nylon lump that had once been a discarded line. I wanted to do better next time.
Actually winning the prize was quite something. The quality of the other entries was very high, as is most of what the Cruising Association does. I chose “Palm Tree Anchoring” as my subject because it’s a bit of fun but it also touches on social as well as practical features of sailing in the Caribbean, and I wanted to encourage more CA members to try the Caribbean.
I’ve made this article to be downloaded as a pdf because it’s a file with photos and an illustration and an emailed pdf is the most efficient way to get it to you. Fill in the address where you want the story to go to.
